Dee McCandlish Scholarships:

POPE SCHOLARSHIP

Established in 1972, the Pope Scholarship Fund has awarded over $170,000 in financial aid to 80 deserving students at colleges and universities in North and South Carolina. Honoring the memory of industry pioneer Claude E. Pope, the scholarships are available to college students pursuing studies in mortgage banking, finance, or a related field. These scholarships are solely funded by donations from members and fundraising activities organized by the Scholarship and Recognition Committee.

Requirements and Eligibility

  • The Pope Scholarship targets students focusing on mortgage banking or mortgage-financing studies, such as real estate, banking, and economics. Applicants must Please provide a statement detailing why you believe you deserve the scholarship along with your future career aspirations. (Limit: 150 words)

  • Applicants must be rising juniors in a 4-year accredited college or university in North Carolina or South Carolina. Children of MBAC members are eligible, but parental contributions will not influence selection.

  • Applicants must reside in North Carolina or South Carolina and can attend a college or university in either state.

  • Financial need will not impact the committee's decision. 

  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required, but grades are just one aspect of the application review.

  • Include a certified transcript and a suitable photograph with your application. Incomplete applications without transcripts will not be considered by the committee.

  • Each winner will receive a total of $3,000 in scholarship funds distributed in four equal installments during their Junior and Senior years. A total of $1,500 will be distributed during Junior year and a total of $1,500 will be distributed during Senior year.

  • Applications must reach and be submitted to MBAC scholarship committee by July 31.

DEE McCANDLISH SCHOLARSHIP

The Dee McCandlish Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 and was first announced at the 52nd Annual Convention of MBAC in Hilton Head, SC on the retirement of former Executive Director McCandlish.  The scholarship was created to honor McCandlish for her excellence in service to MBAC over a 20 year period.

  • The scholarship is designed for employees of MBAC member firms or individual MBAC members seeking education in mortgage banking or mortgage financing to enhance their career opportunities in the mortgage lending sector. Women applicants will receive preference.

  • Eligible candidates must be employed by an MBAC member firm or be individual MBAC members in North Carolina or South Carolina, residing in either state. They can pursue studies outside their residing state.

  • Financial need will not impact the selection process. 

  • Scholarship benefits include coverage for tuition, registration, class materials, or accommodation for individuals aspiring to progress in Mortgage Banking.

  • However, travel and meal expenses are not covered.

  • The Scholarship and Recognition Committee will assess applications twice annually, with awards in March and September.

  • February 1st is the deadline for March awards, and August 1st for September awards.
